Aesop's Fables: A Classic Illustrated Edition A selection of Aesop's fables with illustrations from older editions, featuring such artists as Randolph Caldecott, Arthur Rackham, Walter Crane, and Alexander Calder. (I wish I had this book)

Review from The Horn Book, Inc.:
A collection of Aesop's fables, reminiscent of the Caldecott tellings, is illustrated with forty color and twenty black-and-white illustrations culled from editions published over the last 150 years. The introduction gives the history of Aesop and his illustrators, and the comparison of illustrators' styles is interesting.

    Review from School Library Journal:
Gr 3 Up-- No other collection of fables so clearly demonstrates the range of artists who have illustrated Aesop than this one. More than 50 fables are each accompanied by at least one illustration from nearly 30 works from Charles Henry Bennett's 1857 version to Edward Bawden's in 1970. The excellent introduction sums up Aesop's importance in literature, and discusses the gradual shift in the intended audience over the years, from adults to children and back to adults.

The fantastic array of classic illustrations, reproduced from original editions in museums and private collections. There is a wide assortment of illustrational styles, and the list of artists reads like a ``Who's Who'' of 19th and early 20th century art: Edwin Noble, Arthur Rackham, Alexander Calder, Walter Crane, Randolph Caldecott, Milo Winter, Jack Orr, and Sophia Rosamund Praeger. --Denise Anton Wright, Library Book Selection Service, Inc., Bloomington, IL -School Library Journal

Aesop's Fables: With a Life of Aesop
Classic but not necessarily for children.

    Review from Library Journal:
The first English translation of the earliest complete Aesop in Spain, this volume boasts nearly 200 woodcuts from the 1489 edition of Jan Hurus. Among the more than 150 Aesopic and ``tagalong'' fables, there are universal lessons for ``any age and any culture''--as well as a good deal of culturally specific misogyny, anticlericalism, etc. Just as historically significant as the fables and illustrations is the picaresque invention called the ``Life'' of Aesop, an episodic and fanciful creation that marks a step in the development of fiction. -- Patricia Dooley, Univ. of Washington Lib. Sch., Seattle -Library Journal
